US Admiral to Brief Congress as Bipartisan Scrutiny Grows Over Boat Strike

A high-ranking American naval admiral is set to provide a classified briefing to congressional members overseeing the military this week, as they examine a US strike on a vessel in the Caribbean Sea. The incident, which allegedly targeted a craft transporting drugs, reportedly included a second strike that killed any remaining individuals.

White House Justifies Strikes as Self-Defense

The administration spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, on the start of the week stated that the second strike was conducted “as a defensive action” and in accordance with regulations governing armed conflict. Bipartisan examination has increased over a account that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave a spoken command in last month to attack the boat.

Democratic lawmakers have argued the allegations, initially disclosed last week, could constitute a violation of international law, and Republicans have also voiced their concerns about the lawfulness of the attack on September 2nd. The House and Senate military oversight panels have initiated investigations into the recent series of US armed engagements on boats in the Caribbean region and Pacific waters.

“The Defense Secretary authorised Adm [Frank M] Bradley to conduct these military actions,” stated Leavitt. “The commander worked well within his authority and the legal framework, overseeing the engagement to ensure the vessel was destroyed and the danger to the United States was eliminated.”

In her comments to the press, Leavitt did not challenge the account that there were individuals who survived after the first strike. Her explanation came after former President Donald Trump a day earlier said he “wouldn’t have wanted that – not a second strike” when questioned about the incident.

Growing Congressional Concern and Internal Backing

Late on Monday, Hegseth posted: “Adm Mitch Bradley is an national hero, a consummate professional, and has my 100% support. I support him and the combat decisions he has made – on the September 2nd operation and all others since.”

A thirty days following the strike, Bradley was elevated from head of JSOC to chief of USSOCOM.

Concern over the government’s armed actions against alleged drug-smuggling boats has been building in Congress, but details of this follow-on strike shocked many lawmakers from across the aisle and sparked stark inquiries about the lawfulness of the attacks and the broader policy in the region, particularly toward Venezuela's leader Nicolás Maduro.

The lawmakers said they did not have confirmation whether the recent report was accurate, and some Republicans were sceptical. Nevertheless, they stated the reported targeting of individuals of an first missile strike presented serious concerns and merited further scrutiny.

Administration and Military Officials Reiterate Position

The administration commented after the president on Sunday vigorously defended Hegseth. “Pete said he did not command the death of those two men,” Trump stated. He continued, “And I trust him.”

Leavitt noted Hegseth had conversed with members of Congress who may have voiced some concerns about the reports over the weekend.

Gen Dan Caine, the head of the military's top officers, also communicated over the weekend period with the two Republican and two Democratic lawmakers heading the Senate and House military committees. He restated “his trust and confidence in the seasoned officers at every echelon”, Caine’s office stated in a statement.

The release added that the conversation centered on “discussing the intent and lawfulness of operations to disrupt illicit trafficking networks which endanger the safety and stability of the Americas”.

Legislative Leaders React and Pledge Probe

The top Senate Republican, John Thune, on Monday generally supported the operations, echoing the White House line that they were necessary to stem the influx of illegal narcotics into the US.

Thune stated the committees in the legislature would investigate what happened. “I don’t think you want to draw any judgments or inferences until you have all the facts,” he said of the 2 September strike. “We’ll see where they lead.”

Following the news article, Hegseth said on the end of the week that “fake news is producing more false, inflammatory, and disparaging coverage to undermine our incredible warriors working to defend the nation”.

“Our current operations in the region are legal under both US and international law, with all actions in accordance with the rules of war – and approved by the best military and civilian lawyers, throughout the chain of command,” Hegseth wrote.

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, labeled Hegseth a “disgrace” over his reaction to detractors. Schumer called for that Hegseth release the video of the strike and appear under penalty of perjury about what happened.

The Republican senator for Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the ranking member of the Senate military panel, vowed that his panel’s inquiry would be “conducted thoroughly and by the book”.

“We’ll find out the ground truth,” he said, noting that the ramifications of the allegation were “serious charges”.

The 2 September strike was part of a sequence carried out by the American armed forces in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean as Trump has ordered the deployment of a naval group of warships near the Venezuelan coast, including the biggest US aircraft carrier. More than 80 people were killed in the series of attacks.
