The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster
The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."
The last season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
Show History
The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.
The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
