New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly after his electoral win in November.

"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the need to directing my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change there, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

However his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
