Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities released security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
