Bullish Celtic's manager does not fear the sack however supporters show anger after derby defeat.
The Celtic boss declared he was not afraid of dismissal, asserting, “The team is really close to things turning around,” even after edging perilously close to the chopping block with a comprehensive setback against the Ibrox side.
Another Meltdown Sees Derby Disaster
The home side had led the visitors at the interval but a collapse after the break allowed Rangers to pull level on points with the defending Scottish Premiership champions. The former MLS manager, who was hired from the MLS, has now been in charge for six setbacks in his last eight games.
“There is unity with the board,” said the manager.
Questioned about the speculation, he said: “That’s not my focus. I think about discovering solutions to help my team to improve on the fine details.
Protest Erupts
The fans made their feelings clear – aimed at the board and manager – in their hundreds outside the stadium. The board would be most likely to bring back the interim manager, who enjoyed a successful temporary stint previously, should a change be made.
“Wins and losses [that leads to pressure]. And that’s the situation for the moment. Yet in stating that’s how it is, that is not a sign that I am giving up. Absolutely not. My point is we are on the cusp, really, really close to reverse our form.”
Nancy’s Persistent Belief
He highlights the fact Celtic can perform strongly for one half at a time. In fact, if not for missed chances they would have been more than 1-0 up. “The performance had merit except the fact that we missed more goals,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but it's important to stay fair.
“The standard we had at certain moments was exceptionally high. That happened. I wouldn't say that if it was different. But that’s why, regarding outcomes, I said this is the same story. For that reason I feel we are really close to a shift in fortunes. Currently: the fine margins.”
“I saw a lot of encouraging signs that we did, as was the case today. The issue now comes down to consistency. My outlook would be different if I didn't believe it. That’s why I firmly believe we’re going to be able to fix this.”
Opposition Reaction Response
Danny Röhl played down talk of a title charge in spite of what seemed like a landmark win. “Step by step, then we can develop a challenge,” he said. “The faith in the squad is outstanding.”
